Rhododendron on Fansipan


Rhododendron (from Ancient Greek  rhódon : "rose" and déndron : "tree") is a genus of 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family (Ericaceae), either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia, although it is also widespread throughout the highlands of the Appalachian Mountains of North America. 


It is the national flower of Nepal as well as the state flower of West Virginia and Washington. Most species have brightly coloured flowers which bloom from late winter through to early summer. Azaleas make up two subgenera of Rhododendron. They are distinguished from "true" rhododendrons by having only five anthers per flower.


In Vietnam, there are only mountainous areas of Sa Pa (Lao Cai province), Bach Ma (Thua Thien Hue province), Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc province), Da Lat (Lam Dong province) where natural Azalea flowers grow. . Particularly in Hoang Lien National Park, there have been 30 species of Azalea flowers discovered. 


Do Quyen (Rhododendron) forest is abundant in Fansipan (peak=3,143m) and Son La. However, Fansipan rhododendron trees are thinner than Son La rhododendron, only live at altitudes above 2,000 meters, in cold air, the colors are particularly fresh, beautiful trees, often up to 300-400 years old.


From the end of spring until the end of summer is the time of azaleas bloom, to have fresh flowers that make tourists fascinated, Do Quyen takes 7 months to make buds, flowering. Each bunch of buds, like the germ of stone, is brewed in the rain and wind, the ice is thick and waiting when it is freezing will be warm and warm by the summer sunshine. The most blooming rhododendron blooms can be as big as a large bowl, very beautiful sphere.
