Round Island Lighthouse, Michigan, USA

This idyllic clapboard lighthouse in Michigan, which dates from 1892, comes with its very own island. Located on the lower St Mary's River, the property is available via Private Islands Online for just shy of $2 million (£1.62m).

Astronomical electricity bills won't be a problem in this lighthouse. While the hexagonal lantern room remains, the light was moved to a nearby tower back in 1923.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom lighthouse, which was extensively renovated in the 1990s, retains many of its original features, from ash hardwood flooring to antique staircases.

Oversized windows fill the property with light and showcase the fabulous river views. Plus, there's a large decked area in front of the lighthouse - the perfect spot to savour the beautiful vistas.

The master bedroom also offers spectacular views of the grounds and river. And if that isn't enough to tempt you, a boat and small mooring pier are included in the price.

Dämmans Fyr, Kalmarsund, Sweden

This charming Swedish lighthouse is located on a rocky islet in the Baltic Sea - it is currently available for event bookings via Valdi Private Islands.

Upon its completion in 1873, Dämmans Fyr was Sweden's most expensive and advanced lighthouse. It remained in service until 1968.

The lighthouse, which operated as a luxury hotel from the 1990s until 2012, can sleep up to 20 people. The complex includes a breakwall and helipad.

The lighthouse's many bedrooms rock a nautical theme and feature large windows from which to enjoy coastal views. White wood-boarded walls create a fresh, neutral space, offering a contemporary nod to life on the seven seas.

The lighthouse also benefits from swanky wetrooms with huge stone baths for extra wow-factor, not to mention a state-of-the-art kitchen area.

The four-bedroom lighthouse offers a selection of classic double rooms to choose from. Here, a regal four-poster bed, wooden floors and fireplace mantel are complimented by traditional woven rugs and dark wood furnishings.

An alternative bedroom offers more of a country feel. The slightly smaller room is just as cosy, with a white wire bedframe backing onto wood-panelled walls, which have been painted in a warm and welcoming pink.
